It’s all about Words Pictures and Numbers

Dr. Clement Weinberger – that’s me – is a freelance consultant. I have a PhD in biology and changed careers four or five times before I began working as a freelance editor with people who find it easy to tell you what they mean but difficult to write it down. You know that speaking and writing are quite different ways of communicating.

My last corporate position was Director of Medical Communications in the Medical Affairs Department of a vaccine company, where I coordinated the publication of safety and efficacy studies required by regulatory authorities, Before that I taught at both the secondary school and University levels, did post-doctoral research in developmental biology and the biology of pediatric neuroectodermal tumors, was a marketing manager for a medical device company, sold medical laboratory services to pathologists, and was an editor/writer/communications manager at medical education companies. After I retired, I continued to work independently with investigators who wanted editorial assistance because English was not their first language.

What’s “My Office Suite” About?

It’s about writing and how investigators can use AI to help them communicate their science.

When I was a communications director, accepted manuscripts would come back from the journal with editorial changes that needed author approval before publication. Eventually that stopped, and because English is the language of most peer-review journals with an international readership, .many authors were told that their article was accepted pending revision and with editing to improve the English. Companies who did that began to appear online, and I began working for some of them as a freelance editor. That model works to produce English-language publications that clearly communicate the “science,” but the availability of AI research and writing apps in 2021–2022 changed “everything.” Some publishers now offer AI-supported editing of manuscripts before peer review, and AI benefits investigators in many ways from planning research to publishing it. An office suite like Word, Excel, and Powerpoint along with statistics apps work well in any language, and investigators can use AI to help communicate their findings regardless of the language they speak. I’m a human editor who takes a look at manuscripts just before the authors submit them.
